Above: A fun video about how people think of hypnotherapy :-)
I've found that clients are often worried about what will happen in a session, whether they will remember what has happened, whether they will go to sleep, or how it will feel. So I've compiled this page to help alleviate any worries you may have about having hypnotherapy. If you are thinking about booking a session, but have any questions not covered here, please do feel free to give me a call and I'll be very happy to explain anything you need to know and put your worries to rest.
What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is just a deeply relaxed state, where you remain totally aware of what is going on around you and are in complete control. It's actually very relaxing and calming and clients tell me how much better they feel afterwards and how refreshed and energised it makes them.
How does it work? In this relaxed state, you are able to accept suggestions to overcome old, negative habits and patterns of behaviour that are holding you back. You can take on new, positive habits to change how you look at things and how you react. For example, to reject unhealthy eating habits or give up smoking for good. With stress and anxiety, it helps you to understand why you feel that way and gives you the tools to change your reactions to stresses in your life.
How long will it take? This depends on the issue you want help with. Stopping smoking only takes one session and you will be smoke-free for life. Losing weight usually takes four sessions. I will ask you about your specific situation and together we will work out a personalised, individual course of therapy for you, depending on your needs. Is what I tell you confidential? Absolutely. Everything you say in sessions is completely confidential, so there is no need to worry. The only exception is if you tell me anything about involvement in a major crime.
What will happen? We will have a chat, maybe a cup of coffee, in my very pleasant, relaxing and comfortable room. With your agreement, I will help you achieve a deeply relaxed state, which is sometimes called a trance, but where you will remain aware of everything and will be fully in control. You will be sitting in a comfortable chair with your eyes closed, listening to relaxing music and I will talk to you about changing your negative patterns and leaving behind old, unhelpful habits, replacing them with positive, helpful suggestions. Usually a session takes about an hour altogether. I will often provide an audio track for you to listen to at home, which will help to embed the new habits.
How does it feel to be hypnotised? I am often asked how it feels to be hypnotised, or how will you know that you are hypnotised? I think people sometimes expect it to be very 'New Age' and strange, and are maybe worried that they won't know what's happening or remember what was said. In fact, different people experience it differently. Some say it feels like being somewhere far away, and yet still aware of the room and the chair they are sitting in. Others just feel like they are very relaxed, but still perfectly present. Some feel drowsy, others are completely alert. Some remember every word that is said and others only recall some of it. We are all different and we all react slightly differently, but the main thing is that you are still totally in control. Nothing is done 'to' you, as you are a willing partner in the session and cannot be made to do anything you don't want to do. The most common reaction is feeling as if they are in a kind of relaxed, comfortable 'twilight' between waking and sleeping, aware of what is going on, but feeling very calm and relaxed. Every client I have had has enjoyed the experience and felt much calmer and more peaceful afterwards, whatever the reason for the session. It can be an oasis of calm and tranquility in our very busy lives. If you are considering hypnotherapy, but are a bit uncertain, just get in touch and I will happily answer any questions you have.
