Well here we are in a whole new year. Welcome, 2018! I hope you had a break over Christmas and the New Year and are up back and at ‘em!
Maybe you are already planning how to make 2018 a great year for you. Maybe you are planning to lose weight, stop smoking, tackle your self-confidence issues, or something else entirely.
Whatever you are thinking about, one thing is for sure. It’s that time of the year when your inbox, Facebook, etc, etc will be filled with messages about how you can make 2018 your best year yet; how whatever they are selling will guarantee you success at whatever you want to achieve; and how only they hold the secret to that success. Which is all very well, and may even be true, but can certainly feel annoying, exhausting or completely overwhelming.
So here are two words of sound advice from that incredible author, Douglas Adams:
Don’t feel pressured into making any snap decisions. Don’t rush into anything just to be doing something.
Of course it’s true this is a whole new year, full of exciting and rewarding possibilities. But it’s not a magical date, with a ‘use by’ expiry coming up any time soon. The possibilities to make changes to your life exist today, tomorrow, next week or next month. They are there now and they will still be there whenever YOU are ready. Again, I say:
The New Year is a great time to sit back, reflect on the past and plan for the future. To think about what went well last year and what might need to change this year. But tomorrow is also a great time to do that, and next week, and next month, and whenever YOU are ready to commit to that change, any day over the coming year. The important thing is that you are willing to make changes and to work towards what you want, maybe in partnership with a professional who can help you.
The important thing is to remember that life doesn’t get better by CHANCE, it gets better by CHANGE.
